This marks the 17th year the marathon has taken place, and this year’s is sure to be the biggest one yet. The event is spread out over three days, kicking off with a Runner’s Expo on Thursday, February 13th at 5:00 pm at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. All sorts of vendors and event sponsors will be there showcasing their wares and services.
The events will begin the next day on the 14th with several shorter races. First is the Ripley’s Family Fun Run that begins at Ripley’s Aquarium at 5:30 pm and circles Broadway at the Beach. At 7:00 pm, the Neon Night 5K will commence at 29th Avenue North outside Broadway at the Beach.
These events lead up to the main event: the 2014 Myrtle Beach Marathon! Set to begin at 6:30 am on Saturday, the course traverses down Robert Grissom Parkway, heads south to the Market Common area, loops back north up Ocean Boulevard for nine miles then returning southbound again on Robert Grissom Parkway. In addition to the full marathon, there will also be a half marathon and a team relay race occurring that day.
In addition to this, there will be plenty of post-race parties both days taking place at Ripley’s Aquarium on February 14th and the House of Blues on February 15th. Throughout the festivities, the Rare Species Fund has partnered with the marathon, so runners and spectators alike can expect to see wildlife exhibits featuring chimpanzees, tigers and even an elephant! The group uses this exposure to raise both funds and awareness for issues plaguing endangered animals around the world.
